Nasi Campur Ayam Kampung Khas Bali Made Weti
Five Indonesian culinary establishments and a food businessman have just won awards in three categories at the World Street Food Congress, proving that Indonesia's culinary diversity deserves worldwide recognition.
Held in Singapore for the first time from May 31-June 9, the congress named Iwan Tjandra, director of Eat and Eat Food Court chain, as the Street Food Entrepreneur of the Year, while his establishment was awarded Best Street Food Eatery Concept.
Four restaurants with their authentic flavors ' Soto Ayam Ambengan Pak Sadi Asli in Jakarta; Sate Ayam Barokah Haji Basiri in Jakarta; Nasi Campur Ayam Kampung Khas Bali Made Weti and Rumah Makan Nasi Kapau in West Sumatra ' are among 20 listed as the Street Food Masters of the Year.
The criteria included ingredients sourcing, preparation, hygiene, adaptability, consistency, confidence and the overall quality and flavor.
While conferring the award in Jakarta on July 30, the congress' chairman KF Seetoh, who is the founder of popular Singaporean food guide Makansutra, said the decision to honor Pak Sadi was based on many aspects, from his humble beginnings, the jobs he created at his 15 outlets and the unique 'brand' of Indonesian Soto.
Pak Sadi, ranked first on the list of Street Food Masters of the Year, started learning the ropes of the food trade while assisting his uncle selling soto ayam (aromatic chicken soup) Lamongan as a kid. As he acquired more experience, his signature soto recipe paved the way to a successful business venture.
Sate Ayam Barokah Haji Basiri, popular for its chicken satay ranked 6th, while Nasi Campur Ayam Kampung Khas Bali Made Weti, famed for its delicious and tasty traditional Balinese chicken rice, placed 11th.
Rumah Makan Nasi Kapau Sumatra, renowned for its rendang (beef cooked in spices and coconut milk), placed 16th.
International chef Anthony Bourdain even praised the Nasi Kapau's rendang as the best he has ever tasted.
