'There are a total of 5,315 residents living in the red zone, a radius of three kilometers from the volcano crater,' the Sikka Disaster Management Agency (BDPB) chief, Eduardus Desa Pante, told The Jakarta Post when contacted from East Manggarai.
'We evacuated 1,337 people on Monday. They initially refused because their culture does not allow them to leave their land. We managed to persuade them to leave.'
On Saturday, the authorities evacuated some 3,000 residents from the island.
Meanwhile, there are already 1,417 residents who had taken refuge in Ropa, Ende regency when the volcano erupted in February.
Eduardus also confirmed that the two missing children were believed to have succumbed to the lava.
