he National Police announced onWednesday that material losses caused by road accidents during theIdul Fitri holiday from Aug. 2 to 13 had reached Rp 6.63 billion (US$643,110).
National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said the figure was 22 percent less than last year's total losses, in line with the declining number of traffic accidents from last year.
'As of Tuesday, there have been 2,826 traffic accidents, a 28 percent drop from the 3,970 cases in 2012. We recorded 630 fatalities this year, while last year there were 683 deaths,' Agus said.
The lower figure has been attributed to the police's annual Ketupat Operation, which aims to safeguard travelers before, during and immediately after the Idul Fitri holiday.(dic)
