Jambi prison grants no remission for graft inmates

T

he Jambi Penitentiary hasdecided to turn down sentence reduction requested by nine graft case inmates.Prison authorities reasoned that it had only followed procedure as the Law andHuman Rights Ministry had said nothing about the request.

'€œWe are going to consider the request next year,'€ Meitha of the Jambi Penitentiary said without further elaboration on Sunday.

When asked about the graft inmates who had requested the reduction, Meitha said she did not recognize them one by one.

The sentence reduction was requested as part of the 68th Independence Day commemoration that falls on August 17. An inmate is allowed to request a sentence reduction if he or she has done two thirds of his or her sentence and was well behaved during the sentence.

According to Indonesia'€™s law, only convicts that had been sentenced with life or death sentences are not allowed to request or gain remission.(dic)
