German cultural center GoetheHaus will host a concert of classical and romantic music on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. featuring siblings Benjamin and Evamaria Fischer. The program for oboe, English horn and piano will include pieces by Mozart, Schumann, Poulenc and Nielsen. Benjamin studied at the University of the Arts in Bern, Germany, and continued his studies at the Conservatorio Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. He then completed his Postgraduate Studies at the University of the Arts in Bremen and he received a scholarship from the Junge Musiker Stiftung (Young Musicians Foundation) in 2008. Evamaria started her piano lessons at the age of six. She won several competitions and started solo concerts from an early age onwards. After finishing high-school she studied at the University of the Arts in Zurich and then continued her studies at the Lucerne School of Music.

Screening

Ahead of the Sumo Tournament at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, the Japan Foundation will screen a sumo-themed film, Shiko Funjatta (Sumo Do, Sumo Don'€™t ), at the JF Hall in Gedung Summitmas on Jl. Jend. Sudirman on Aug. 23. It tells the story of main character Shuhei Yamamoto who must join the school'€™s sumo team to please his professor in order to graduate from college in a timely manner, and to gain the job waiting for him due to his family connections. Shuhei and the other reluctant sumo wrestlers on the team are inspired by the professor'€™s determination into doing their best for the school. The 1992 film was directed by Masayuki Suo and was chosen as Best Film at the 16th Japan Academy Prize ceremony.

Exhibition

Bentara Budaya Jakarta will host an exhibition of paintings by Augustin Sibarani from Aug. 23 to 29. The 87-year-old artist is described as a dramatic expressionist with bold strikes and bitter humor. Augustin is a big name in political caricatures, punching down the despotic rulers and hypocritical elites in his works, but not many know his painting. Some of his paintings displayed at the exhibition tell his life during the Indonesian independence war '€“ he was a lieutenant '€“ and some others tell his view on social, economic gap and political mess that tangles the country. His works offer values held by a painter who is denied by his government, but loves the nation wholeheartedly nevertheless.
