ational Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie said on Monday that police hadrearrested 23 of the 30 prisoners who escaped from the Labuhan Ruku prison in NorthSumatra.
"Three prisoners surrendered themselves to Labuhan Rukuprison guards and the other 20 are currently being detained in various police stations in North Sumatra," Ronny said in Jakarta.
He said the police had received significant assistance from local military personnel.
On Sunday, hundreds of inmates
set the prison ablaze in a protest about overcrowding at the facility. The prison
has capacity to accommodate 300 inmates but is home to about 800.
The 30 inmates escaped by climbing over a prison wall. Ronny confirmed that none
of the escapees were convicted terrorists.
"Most of them are serving time for drug crimes, while the remainder are murder and robbery convicts," he said.(dic)
