he North Sumatra Law andHuman Rights Office, with the assistance of the police and the military, hastransferred 500 prisoners deemed to be instigators of a prison riot, from LabuhanRuku prison to various prisons and jails throughout the province.
'We must complete the transfer today simply because Labuhan Ruku prison is no longer fit [for habitation] due to massive damage sustained in yesterday's fire,' acting penitentiary director general Bambang Krisbanu said on Monday.
Approximately 80 percent of Labuhan Ruku prison was destroyed in the fire, leaving only a mosque, a church and a hall unscathed.
Labuhan Ruku prison was engulfed by fire after thousands of prisoners ran amok yesterday. Thirty prisoners reportedly escaped the prison, but 23 have since been recaptured.
North Sumatra Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Heru Prakoso said according to the preliminary police investigation, the prison riot was started by a group of prisoners attacking a prison guard, L Nababan.
The assault, he went on, was likely prompted by prisoners' disappointment that their requests for remissions had been denied.(dic)
