he Democratic Party has tapped lawmaker Indrawati Sukadis to be the party'€™s new treasurer, taking over the position previously headed by graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin.

Indrawati was appointed to replace Handoyo Mulyadi, who resigned from the post earlier this month due to health problems.

According to Nurhayati Ali Assegaf, Democratic Party deputy chairman and leader of the party'€™s faction at the House of Representatives, Indrawati is the right person due to her integrity and loyalty to the party.

'€œAs a former deputy treasurer, she [Indrawati] was automatically tapped to be the new treasurer,'€ Nurhayati told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

In her new role as party treasurer, Indrawati will manage the party'€™s financial affairs, although, according to Nurhayati, she is not responsible for the Democratic Party'€™s sources of income.

In a separate interview, another Democratic Party deputy chairman, Max Sopacua, emphasized that '€œthe party'€™s revenue is not Indrawati'€™s responsibility because there is a monthly donation fee is automatically withdrawn from lawmakers'€™ salaries'€.

'€œTherefore, she is only responsible for how the money will be used,'€ Max said.

Indrawati, who is a doctor by training, is currently a member of House Commission V overseeing transportation and has been a member of Commission IX on health and welfare affairs.

She graduated from the school of medicine at the Christian University of Indonesia (UKI) .

Before entering politics, Indrawati headed the kidney transplant division of the Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) Hospital in Cikini, Central Jakarta, from 1985, until she was elected a Democratic Party lawmaker in 2009.

Meanwhile, in between her hectic schedule as a doctor with PGI Cikini Hospital, Indrawati was also chief medical officer for the Jakarta-based SOS Medika Clinic from 1990 to 2007.
