ormer Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD said on Thursday that he wasconsidering input from his political advisory team, which had told him that theruling Democratic Party's primary was likely only a political campaign.
Previously, the former National Awakening Party (PKB)
politician said he was ready to join the upcoming primary.
'My team has told me the convention is merely a [political] campaign as
they have inflated the people being approached by the committee as
candidates," Mahfud said.
He added that his team had advised him that the convention was
unlikely to end with a good quality result as the Democratic Party
seemed to have already set certain
targets. However, he added that he would still consider any developments
that
may occur both with the party and the primary.
Mahfud has been rated among the top-10 presidential contenders in a number of
political surveys, along with the likes of State-Owned Enterprises Minister
Dahlan Iskan, Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan, former vice president Jusuf Kalla and Jakarta
Governor Joko Widodo.(dic)
