he credibilityof the Democratic Party's (PD) convention has been called into question following refusals byfour prominent figures to join the party's convention, an analyst says.
'People might think that the convention is not credible, due to the vague selection mechanism and lack of transparency in the invitation process,' analyst Hanta Yudha AR of Pol-Tracking Institute said, as quoted by Kompas.com.
The four figures who refused to attend are former Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD, former Central Java deputy governor Rustriningsih, Lion Air CEO Rusdi Kirana and Indonesian Red Cross chairman Jusuf Kalla.
Hanta said candidates were selected in a closed meeting without releasing the selection criteria to the public. Besides, he added, the whole idea of organizing a convention had clearly violated the party's own constitution that stipulates that a presidential candidate was appointed by the board of trustees.
According to Hanta, if the convention was conducted professionally it might elect a credible presidential candidate and boost the party's electability, which has recently fallen due to graft scandals implicating a number of its politicians. (hrl/dic)
