Disgraced general gets 10 years in prison

T

he Jakarta Corruption Court'€™s panel of judges has sentenced former nationaltraffic police commander Insp. Gen. Djoko Susilo, a suspect in the high-profiledriving simulator procurement graft case, to 10 years in prison.

'€œThe panel sentences him to 10 years in prison and orders him to pay Rp 500 million (US$45,000) in fines. Should he fail to pay the fines, he will have to serve an additional six months in prison,'€ presiding judge Suhartoyo told the Court on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Commenting on the ruling, Djoko'€™s lawyer,Juniver Girsang, said he would file an appeal.

'€œAfter a discussion with my client, we have decided to appeal the ruling,'€ Juniver said.

Prosecutor KMS Roni said they needed to consult with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) before deciding to either accept the ruling or file an appeal.

Prosecutors earlier sought 18 years in prison and Rp 1 billion in fines for Djoko. In fact, the prosecutors had also earlier demanded that the panel withdraw Djoko'€™s political rights so that he would not be able to run for public office in the future.

Djoko was accused of abusing his authority by appointing PT Citra Mandiri Metalindo Abadi as the winner of the driving simulator project tender. Later on, he received Rp 32 billion in bribe money from Budi Susanto, owner of PT Citra Mandiri Metalindo Abadi.

Prosecutors also suspected that Djoko laundered more than Rp 100 billion in the form of assets and money during two periods of time, from 2002 until 2010 and from 2010 until 2012.

As a two-star police general, Djoko received a monthly salary of Rp 28 million.(hrl/dic)
