Official: 4 Afghan police killed by roadside bomb

A

provincial official says four police officers guarding a mayor were killed when their convoy hit a roadside bomb in northern Afghanistan.

Abdul Marouf Rasekh, spokesman for the governor of Badakhshan province, says the incident occurred Tuesday in Barak district.

It's the latest in a surge of attacks across Afghanistan as U.S.-led foreign forces reduce their presence after years of battling the Taliban.

Nazer Mohammad Neyazi, mayor of Faiz Abad city, was the apparent target. He was returning from a visit to a road project when the blast hit the convoy.

The mayor was not hurt in the attack. One police officer was wounded.

Rasekh says Neyazi is a former military general and an influential provincial politician.
