resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says Indonesia is continuing to contribute toward a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Syria so that direct military intervention can be avoided.
'Morally, we are obliged to do our utmost to prevent a humanitarian tragedy from happening. This is a role we should play,' said Yudhoyono shortly after arriving at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta, on Sunday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
'We have never interfered in Syria's domestic affairs; however, both Russian and the US military forces are getting closer. If not prevented, I worry that this could threaten international security,' the President added.
Yudhoyono said Indonesia continued to foster diplomatic efforts to convey alternative solutions to the Syrian conflict, without using military force.
Earlier, the President said Indonesia considered the use of military force, especially if carried out without a mandate from the United Nations (UN) Security Council, was not a proper way to resolve the Syrian conflict.
Yudhoyono said Syria was an international problem which involved many countries and political interests and Indonesia would use all diplomatic channels and approaches to help resolve it.
The President and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma on Sunday after carrying out official state visits to Kazakhstan and Poland and attending the G20 Summit in St.Petersburg, Russia. (ebf)
