ormer head of operations area IV Semarang at state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), Arif Wahyudi, has been sentenced to 14 months behind bars for the procurement of generators in 2009 that caused state losses of Rp 2.5 billion (US$220,300).
Presiding judge Sinung Hermawan also fined Arif Rp 50 million or an additional three months in prison.
The Bandung Corruption Court also sentenced two other defendants, Margan Salum and Julius Aritonang, with similar verdicts.
Prosecutor Luki Afgani said he would think about the verdicts as they were more lenient than his recommendation of 19 months behind bars and a fine of Rp 50 billion for each defendant.
Arif, who was KAI facilities department head, had planned to procure eight 500-kilovolt-ampere generators with a ceiling of Rp 5.6 billion. The procurement was conducted through limited bidding.
The panel of judges stated that Arif had agreed with Margan and Julius, who submitted a proposal of Rp 1.49 million per generator, meaning KAI could only buy five instead of eight generators.
The price of the five generators was Rp 2.1 billion more than the original price.
