Paramadina rector takes sabbatical leave to follow Dems convention

P

aramadina Universityrector Anies Baswedan has decided to take sabbatical leave so he can participatein the Democratic Party presidential convention.

He said he had made the decision to avoid any conflict of interest.

'€œI want to uphold my principles,'€ he said.

He said he had formed a team to help him vie with other contenders to become the party'€™s presidential candidate. When asked whether many people from the Indonesia Mengajar movement were on his team, Anies said he could not prohibit supporters from joining the team.

The Indonesia Mengajar movement was initiated by Anies. It challenges young people with comfortable jobs to become a teacher in a remote area to prove their patriotism.

Former Army chief of staff Pramono Edhie Wibowo and Indonesian Ambassador to the US Dino Patti Djalal are among the 11 contenders in the Democratic Party convention. Whoever emerges as the most popular in opinion polls will be nominated as the Democratic Party'€™s presidential candidate for next year'€™s presidential election.(dic)
