he Bandung Corruption Court sentenced two executives of PT Garindo Utama to three years behind bars on Monday for bribing state officials to issue a land use permit for an exclusive cemetery in Antajaya village, Tanjungsari, in Bogor regency, West Java.
Presiding judge Sinung Hermawan said company president director Sentot Susilo and operations director Nana Supriatna were guilty of promising perks to civil servants in exchange for favors unrelated to their responsibilities.
"They are also fined Rp 200 million [US$17,500] or another four months in prison," said Sinung on Monday.
The verdict was lighter than the four-year sentence sought by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Ely Kusumastuti. Ely said she would consider the verdict.
Three others -- Bogor Legislative Council Speaker Iyus Djuher, Bogor Education Agency staffer Usep Jumeno and Iyus' close friend Listo Welly Sabu -- have also been implicated in the case. They are being tried separately.
The case began when Nana instructed by Sentot to ask Usep for assistance in securing a permit to establish a cemetery on the land. Sentot handed money to Nana on six occasions during the process.
In April, the KPK arrested Sentot, Listo, Usep and Nana and seized Rp 1 billion as evidence when the permit was about to be handed over to Sentot at a rest area on the Jagorawi toll road in Bogor.
