he Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) has stated that TVRI's decision to air nearly two-and-a-half hours of the Democratic Party's presidential convention was excessive and thus clearly violated the
Broadcasting Law.
According to the commission, TVRI violated Article 14 of Law No. 32/2002 on broadcasting and Articles 11 and 22 of the KPI 2012 broadcasting guidelines and standards.
'The broadcasting of the convention was not in line with the journalistic principles of balance and impartiality,' KPI commissioner S Rahmat Arifin said onFriday as quoted by Kompas.com.
He said the KPI intended to reprimand TVRI through administrative sanctions. He added that the KPI would also demand that TVRI make a public announcement that it would provide equal time for all political parties in the future.
The reprimand was a follow-up to complaints received by the KPI from TVRIviewers and activists who felt that the station had gone too far by airing theentire convention. They argued that TVRI, as a public broadcaster, should not breach its independenceand impartiality.(hrl/dic)
