he Jambi Police have decided to be soft on a member of the Suku Anak Dalam tribe in Merangin regency that killed a Sumatran tiger on Sept. 9.
'It was an unintentional killing: The hunter [a local named Dodi] was simply defending himself,' Jambi Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Alamsyah said on Saturday.
He said the police had asked local communities to surrender their homemade firearms, locally known as kecepek, 'some have already surrendered their firearms to us.'
He said the police was attempting to retrieve the tiger skin from the community but they wanted Rp 15 million for the animal's hide.
It has been suggested that the hunter was not aware that the tiger was an endangered species.
