National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) head Insp
ational Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) head Insp.Gen. (ret) Ansya'ad Mbai has said terrorists were behind the three recent policeshootings and added the police had identified three out of five assailants.
'The assailants are members of the eastern and western Indonesia mujahidin groups,' Ansya'ad told reporters in Ambon as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.
He said the reason behind the shootings was because the police were considered as symbols of the state that hunted terrorists down.
'There's been a shift in target. Right now, these terrorists are tending to attack state symbols, no longer the West and its enterprises,' he added.
He added the attacks on police officers were also aimed at breaking the police's concentration in their effort to tackle terrorism and that the country's security institutions were focusing on developing a security system as part of preparations for the APEC Leaders Summit in Bali next month.
The APEC Summit in Bali from Oct 1 to 8 will be attended by 21 heads of governments, including US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin. (hrl/dic)
