n NGO has revealed that the recent peace treaty signed by the Sunni community and displaced Shia followers from Sampang had come under fire by a group of hard-liners, supported by several local radical clerics, who were trying to intimidate those involved in reaching the peace deal.
The Universalia Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHU) has recorded that a group of people had intercepted the Sampang residents who pioneered the reconciliation meeting and threatened them to try and have them abandon the treaty.
'These people have also tried to check if any residents have been helping some of the Shiites to return to their homes,' YLBHU executive director Hertasning Ichlas said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said those who had initiated the peace treaty had vowed to be consistent and, therefore, ignored those who wanted to spoil the reconciliation process.
Dozens of Sampang Shia residents were driven from their villages following an interfaith conflict with their Sunni neighbors, which claimed the lives of two people and injured dozens of others.(hrl/dic)
