ministerial meeting to discuss Asian rhinoceroses will be held in Bandar Lampung, Lampung, on Oct. 2-3, and is expected to be attended by a number of Indonesian and foreign experts.
The meeting would discuss the current state of Asian rhinos, Noverica Widjojo, a spokesman of the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) Indonesia, said in Bandar Lampung on Thursday.
She noted that World Rhino Day, celebrated annually on Sept. 22, provided a forum to remind the international community about the need to save rhinos, which are on the brink of extinction.
Out of the world's five rhino species, Indonesia has two, the one-horned Javanese rhino and two-horned Sumatran rhino, Antara news agency reported. The two species of Indonesian rhinos are listed as being endangered on the Red List of the International Union For Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
The population of Javanese rhinos is around 50 at the Ujung Kulon National Park in Banten Province.
Also, there are about 200 Sumatran rhinos living at the Mount Leuser National Park (Aceh), South Bukit Barisan (West Lampung-Bengkulu) and Way Kambas (East Lampung).
