s many as 10,000 professional and amateur runners are expected to participate in the Jakarta Marathon 2013, which is to be held on Oct. 27.

'€œMore than 5,800 runners and counting have registered to participate in the event. We expect at least 10,000 runners will eventually run the marathon,'€ Tourism and Creative Economy Deputy Minister Sapta Nirwandar told a press conference at Silang Monas, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

He said various side events would be held to add spice to the first Jakarta Marathon, which will also be the first internationally-recognized marathon in Southeast Asia.

It is also expected the event will attract more local and international tourists. It offers a number of categories: a full marathon of 42 kilometers, a half marathon, a 10k and 5k run, and a children'€™s sprint.

Prizes worth at least US$40,000 have been prepared for the winners.

Jakarta Governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo promised that the city administration would support international sporting events to boost the capital'€™s tourist industry.

'€œSuch an event is part of the process of promoting the city. Whatever events are offered to us, we will definitely support them,'€ he said.

Runners wishing to participate in the event may register online at thejakartamarathon.com or at the registration booth in fX shopping mall in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
