alu Mayor Rusdy Mastura will receive an award from aninstitution in Germany forapologizing to victims of the 1965 riot in Palu, Central Sulawesi. Rusdy was former head of the Pancasila Youth movement.
Rusdy apologized to victims of the riot, which broke out at a sports complex in Palu during a gathering two years ago.
Besides apologizing, Rusdy also promised to provide scholarships to children of the victims as well as free healthcare through the Jamkesda health insurance scheme.
He will travel to Germany on Oct. 3 to receive the award. He said he apologized to the 1965 riot victims not because he wished to win praise or recognition from anyone or any country, but because it was the right humanitarian thing to do.
