Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa announced on
Friday that US President Barack
Obama had called off attending the APEC
Summit in Bali.
"President Obama made a telephone call to
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono this
morning, regretting that he could not attend the APEC Summit," Marty told reporters at the Laguna
Resort Hotel.
US Secretary of State John Kerry has been
earmarked to replace Obama during the summit.
Marty said Obama's cancellation had been linked
to the ongoing debt-ceiling crisis in the
US that had resulted in a partial shut down of the world's biggest economy.
The White House
previously announced that Obama would shorten his Asia trip, cancelling his visits to
Malaysia and the Philippines, leaving only
the Bali APEC Summit and the Brunei Darussalam East Asia Summit on his itinerary.
After the cancellation of the Bali visit, it was
still not known whether Obama's planned presence in Brunei would also be
cancelled.(dic)
