China optimistic on food stability

D

espite its large population, China is confident that its food security program would meet demands and is optimistic that the global food security situation will remain stable.

China Business Advisory Council of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) chairman, Frank Ning Gaoning, said at an APEC CEO Summit 2013 discussion on Sunday that the agriculture sector in China contributed to the confidence.

'€œCurrently, the profits from the food and agriculture sector are low, however, they will continue to produce products to maintain stability," said Ning in Nusa Dua, Bali, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Ning said food security, an issue for China, had become a global issue but '€œas long as technology and investment the agriculture sector continued to grow,'€ the outlook was positive.

The world's population is estimated to reach 14 billion people within the next four decades, which will create various problems and could potentially lead to food insecurity.

Data from the Agriculture Ministry in 2013 showed that in terms of food security, Indonesia ranked 66th out of 107 countries.

The ministry'€™s agriculture development and research agency set a food self-sufficiency target of a minimum of 33 million tons of rice, 16 million tons of corns, 2.2 million tons of soybeans, 2.8 million tons of sugar and 484,000 tons of beef every year. (ebf)
