he Directorate General of Immigration has placed travel bans on people close to bribery suspect and former Constitutional Court chief justice Akil Mochtar.
"The travel bans are for Ratu Rita Akil [Akil's wife] and Akil's private driver, Daryono, for six months starting on Oct. 9 [Wednesday]," said Law and Human Rights Deputy Minister Denny Indrayana on Thursday in a message. The ministry oversees the Immigration Office.
Daryono is Akil's driver and is believed to be a key witness in the bribery case. Akil had registered his
new Mercedes Benz S 350 in Daryono's name.
Daryono did not answer a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summons on Monday, and he failed to appear at Constitutional Court ethics hearings on the nights of Monday and Tuesday.
Akil's close relationship with Daryono was revealed by one of Akil's adjutants, Sugianto, during Tuesday's ethics hearing.
According to Sugiono, Daryono has known Akil since the former justice was a West Kalimantan gubernatorial candidate in 2007.
It was previously reported that Akil, who is charged with accepting bribes in connection with two
local election cases being heard by the Constitutional Court, might soon find himself facing additional charges, as the KPK has obtained evidence that he had previously laundered around Rp 100 billion through a company he owns in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
The KPK has also discovered that Susi Tur Handayani, one of the suspects in the bribery case related to the Lebak regency election, had transferred various sums of money to Akil's company.(dic)
