S. Africa ambassador keen to promote Solo

S

outh African Ambassador to Indonesia, Dr. Noel N. Lehoko acknowledged that he was very enthusiastic about his visit to Surakarta, popularly known as Solo. He, in fact, said that he would be very keen to promote the town back home.

The ambassador was welcomed by the Surakarta deputy mayor Achmad Purnomo at the mayor'€™s office on Wednesday.

'€œI hope that this visit will tighten the relationship between Surakarta and South Africa,'€ Achmad said.

He then took the ambassador to visit several popular tourist destinations like the Kauman village, home to famous batik clothing and the Surakarta royal palace. He added that it was greatly expected that the ambassador would get to know Batik more.

Commenting on the visit, Ambassador Lehoko said that he had been very familiar with batik clothing as he witnessed South Africa patron Nelson Mandela wearing batik shirts everyday during his presidency.

'€œSurakarta has been very famous, even in South Africa. As for the batik, we have been very familiar with it as Nelson Mandela also wore batik during his presidency,'€ he said.

He suggested that both regions could initiate various programs like student exchange, tourism promotion and waste management to materialize further cooperation.
