Incumbent wins Dairi election, N. Tapanuli sees second round

T

he North Sumatra Election Commission (KPUD) has announced that North Tapanuli voters will cast their ballots in a second round as no candidate gathered more than 30 percent of the vote.

KPUD chief Lamtagon Manalu said the two tickets who would contest the second round were the Saur Lumbantobing-Manerep Manalu ticket and the Nikson Nababan-Mauliate Simorangkir ticket, who respectively secured 27.66 and 24.98 percent of the vote.

"The second round of the regency election is slated for December 11," he said.

Separately, Dairi KPUD chief Veryanto Sitohang announced that the Johnny Sitohang Adinegoro-Irwansyah Pasi ticket had convincingly won the Dairi regency election by securing 36.25 percent of the vote, or 53,729 votes, surpassing the three other candidates.

"The elected candidates will be sworn in as the new regent and deputy regent in April 18 next year," he said.

The victory, however, left a bad aftertaste with the opposition as the head of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) branch in Dairi, Benpa Binsar Nababan, said he was convinced that there had been systematical wrongdoing during the election that had benefited the winning incumbent.

"We have gathered enough evidence and we will file a lawsuit at the Constitutional Court immediately," he said.

Commenting on this, Dairi election supervising committee chief Hotmanita Capah said she had recommended reelections in some of the regions that showed indications of systematical cheating.(dic)
