Ship catches fire at Tanjung Emas Port

The KLM Surya Gemilang, which was docked at Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang, Central Java, caught fire in an incident on Friday.

Eyewitnesses said they saw thick smoke coming out of the ship'€™s funnels at around 2:30 p.m.

'€œWorkers were welding inside the ship [at the time]. So, maybe the welding caused the fire,'€ Nugroho, the head of marine safety at Tanjung Emas Port, said on Friday.

Several fire trucks were deployed to put out the fire, but by the time the firefighters had finally succeeded in dousing the flames, the wooden ship was completely destroyed.

No casualties were reported in the incident, as all the crew members had managed to abandon ship.

Nugroho said the KLM Surya Gemilang was from Pontianak in West Kalimantan, and that it had been at the port for around three months to undergo repairs.

A similar incident occurred in July 2011, when the KLM Fajar Biru, which was en route from Tanjung Emas in Semarang to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, caught fire in the Java Sea, around 10 nautical miles from Tanjung Emas.
