Greater Jakarta: Chickenpox hits school, leads to one death

EPOK: At least nine sixth graders from Islamic elementary school Al-Muqorrobin in Beji, Depok, have been infected with chickenpox in two weeks, with one ailing student dying.

'€œThree students got it first and then six more fell sick in the same week,'€ vice principal Kiki said on Monday.

He said all the students infected were from two upstairs classrooms.

'€œWe have distributed face masks to students and teachers upstairs to reduce the chances of the disease spreading. We'€™ve also cleaned the classrooms with disinfectant,'€ he added.

One of the students, Rizky Fahrezi, 12, died late on Sunday after he was infected while suffering from a brain tumor.

According to his mother, Eni Fuziati, doctors had to delay the scheduled surgery to remove the liquid that had built up on his brain, pending the departure of the chickenpox.

'€œMy son was admitted to hospital on Oct. 12 and was scheduled for the surgery last Thursday. But as the chickenpox started to heal, he fell into a coma on Thursday,'€ she said on Monday.

Depok Health Agency head Lies Karmawati said her office was not informed of the outbreak and said the officials would disseminate information to the public on infectious diseases and how to prevent them.
