KPK receives more reports on alleged bribes related to election disputes

T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has said it has received more reports of alleged bribes related to election disputes in several regions since it started investigating the Constitutional Court graft case.

'€œFrankly speaking, after a string of arrests on alleged bribes related to the arrangement of election disputes in the court, we have received more reports on alleged bribery in electoral-dispute cases,'€ KPK spokesman Johan Budi in Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said several former regional head candidates who felt that they had been treated unfairly by the court when they filed reports on electoral-dispute cases to the institution had begun to react shortly after former chief justice Akil Mochtar was arrested.

The former candidates, he said, had reported that they had seen '€œoddities'€ in the decisions on the election disputes.

One of the candidates was Atmari, former regent candidate in the direct election of regional head of Tanah Laut, South Sumatra, who reported alleged bribes in the arrangement of the election disputes.

The court'€™s decision affirmed the victory of candidate pair Bambang Alamsyah-Sukamta on May 30 whereas according to Atmari, he had provided evidence to prove that his competitor had committed election fraud, said Johan.

Banyuasin regent and deputy regent candidate, Hazuar Bidui and Slamet Sumosentono, also reported alleged bribes to the court. In the reports, they said that there was an alleged bribe of Rp 10 billion (US$890,000) from Banyuasin regent Yan Anton Ferdian to Akil Mochtar.

The former chief justice was named a suspect in graft cases centering on the arrangement of disputes in the election of regional heads in Gunung Mas and Lebak. (ebf)
