uslim countries are drawing up an action plan toaccelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) during thefourth Islamic Conference of Health Ministers (ICHM) of the Organization ofIslamic Cooperation (OIC), which is being held in Jakarta from Tuesday toThursday this week.

Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi, who is chairing the three-day conference, said on Tuesday that Indonesia was among 14 countries from a total of 57 member states within the OIC that were behind in achieving their MDGs on reduced child mortality, improved maternal health as well as combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, which are due in 2015.

Data from the 2012 Indonesian Demographic and Health  Survey (SDKI), showed that there were 359 maternal deaths per 100,000 love births last year, compared to 228 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2007.

To meet its MDGs, the country'€™s maternal mortality rate would have to decrease to 102 per 100,000 by 2015.

'€œSome of the countries of the OIC haven'€™t achieved their MDGs, therefore we are cooperating to assist each other in achieving those goals,'€ Nafsiah told reporters on Tuesday, citing that Kazakhstan and Brunei Darussalam were among countries that had succeeded in achieving their goals before 2015.

'€œFor instance in combating the HIV/AIDS, we thought it wouldn'€™t be a problem among Islamic countries, but it remains a hard-hitting problem among us,'€ she said.

The conference, with the theme '€œBetter Nutrition, Better Health, Better Ummah [community]'€, would also discuss the increasing number of people suffering from non-communicable diseases such as strokes, cancer and cardiac arrest, within the member states, Nafsiah said.
