Countries meet to discuss carbon footprint

S

ixteen member countries of the Asia-Pacific LegalMeteorology Forum (APLMF) gathered in Yogyakarta on Thursday and Friday todiscuss the latest developments in meteorology, including how to measure thecarbon footprint of exported products.

'€œThe carbon footprint of a product has become a very important issue,'€ Indonesian Deputy Minister of Trade Bayu Krisnamurthi said after officially opening the meeting in Yogyakarta on Thursday.

He said that the total carbon footprint of a product was meant to reflect the amount of carbon emitted during its production process.

He also said that there were many methods that could be used to measure the carbon footprint of a product, yet none of them had been adopted as a standard.

He expressed hope that the two-day meeting, which was also attended by measurement experts, would be able to issue a recommendation on a standard carbon footprint measuring method that could be adopted by many countries.

'€œThis is not easy, but I believe the participating experts will find the best measure,'€ said Bayu, adding that participating countries included Australia, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, South Korea, the US and Vietnam.
