he Yogyakarta branch of the Indonesian JournalistsAssociation (PWI) filed on Monday a pre-trial motion at the Sleman DistrictCourt against the Yogyakarta Police, who are deemed to have failed to solve a17-year-old murder case of journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, widely known asUdin.
'We will never tire of pushing the police to solve the case. We will continue to fight for justice,' Yogyakarta PWI head Sihono HT said.
On Monday, the pre-trial motion was presented by six defense lawyers, namely Ramdlon Naning, Lasdin Wlas, Safiudin, Kurniawan Nuryawan, Maryanto and Dadang Ardani. Dozens of local journalists also appeared at the court building on Monday.
The Yogyakarta PWI's defense division deputy head, Hudono, said the PWI had decided to file the pre-trial motion as the police appeared to have halted their investigation of the murder case. 'In court, our defense team will prove that the Yogyakarta Police have secretly stopped the investigation,' Hudono said.
The motion was accepted by a Sleman Court clerk, Y Siti Yuriah. 'The pre-trial hearing will begin in the next three days,' Siti said.
Udin was allegedly physically attacked by a person or persons unknown at his home in Bantul on Aug. 13, 1996, and died three days later at the Yogyakarta Bethesda Hospital. He was known for his investigative reports into the alleged misappropriation of funds by Bantul regency authorities.
The police arrested Dwi Sumadji alias Iwik and charged him with killing Udin, as Iwik had apparently had an affair with Udin's wife, but the Bantul court later acquitted Iwik due to a lack of evidence.
