he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) said on Friday that it had uncovered a lead into alleged human rights violations in ore mining activities in Pulau Bangka, North Sulawesi.
'The initial lead is based on facts we found in the field,' Komnas HAM commissioner Sandra Moniaga said in Manado as quoted by Antara news agency on Friday.
Sandra said the commission received information from locals, activists and the late former legislator Ferry Tinggogoy regarding the violations, which occurred after a North Minahasa regent issued a permit for PT Mikro Metal Perdana in Bangka.
She said that Komnas HAM issued a recommendation for the local authority regarding the concern. 'We met with representatives from the North Sulawesi Police and demanded they act objectively. We also asked them not to prosecute locals who rejected the mining company,' Sandra said.
