ive palm trees in the National Monument (Monas) area in CentralJakarta were removed only a week after they were planted because they wereblocking a picture of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Acting Jakarta Parks and Cemetery Agency head Yonathan Pasodung confirmed the news on Wednesday, saying that the State Palace had formally requested the removal of the trees.
'The Palace asked us to remove the palm trees,' he said.
The trees had been planted in front of walls that usually displayed pictures of the President, the First Lady along with state guests, located just outside Silang Monas on Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara.
'When we planted the trees, there were no pictures on display but due to visits from the Dutch Prime Minister, the State wanted to display pictures of the state heads,' he said.
Yonathan said that the trees had been re-planted in other locations.
The city administration is redesigning the garden in the capital's landmark. It also plans to add public facilities such as Wi-Fi connection to pamper visitors.
