woman identified only as Lisa has been found guilty ofattempting to sell a baby and sentenced to five years in prison and fined Rp 60million (US$5,400).
'The defendant has been proved beyond reasonable doubt of violating the Child Protection Law,' said presiding judge Porman Situmorang at the Palembang District Court on Wednesday.
The court also found her accomplice, Martini, guilty of aiding and abetting Lisa in the crime, sentencing her to four-and-a-half years in prison together with a fine of Rp 60 million.
The interregional baby-trade syndicate was uncovered following tip-offs from the public. Lisa and Martini were arrested in June for trying to sell a 3-week-old baby from Lampung to undercover police for Rp 15 million, with a down payment of Rp 500,000.
South Sumatra Police general crimes director Adj. Sr. Comr. Kristoyo Arianto said the baby was currently being cared for at the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Palembang.
'We are trying to find the baby's parents before we hand it over to the local social agency or the National Commission for Child Protection [Komnas Anak]. All expenses are being covered by the state,' Kristovo said.
Previously during questioning, Lisa admitted that she and Martini had been instructed to deliver the baby [to a buyer] by a woman named Narty, who is also a Lampung resident.
'I have no idea who the parents of the baby are. Bu Narty told me to deliver the baby. She said she would give me Rp 3 million if the mission was accomplished,' Lisa said.
'This was my second time delivering babies to Palembang. The first baby was sold for Rp 8 million and I earned Rp 3 million for the job,' she added.
