tate-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Region IV Semarang in Central Java is in the process of reclaiming its assets in order to improve train services in the city.
KAI spokesperson Eko Budiyanto told The Jakarta Post in Semarang on Thursday that the assets included plots of land located along railway tracks and official residences of PT KAI employees.
Eko said the company was evicting people who had built houses on
PT KAI land. 'They are not allowed to do so as it could disrupt railway traffic,' Eko said.
The evictions, he said, sparked protests from people forced to leave their homes, which would be demolished. The site of the demolished houses will be used to build a double-track railway.
'We will continue the evictions because PT KAI is in possession of the land deeds,' Eko said.
