he city administration will check on the presenceof houses belonging to 180 families onthe banks of the Sunter River, which is now being dredged in an attempt tomitigate floods during the rainy season.
The head of control and supervision at the Jakarta Public Works Agency, Subandi, said on Monday that his staff would check whether the 180 small residential homes were legal, adding that the families could not be evicted if they had land certificates or other official documents, such as building permits, issued by relevant authorities.
'We will have to negotiate to relocate them to other areas so that the dredging can be completed without any complications,' he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo paid a visit to the river, which flows through the east flood-control canal in East Jakarta and on to the sea.
Upon his arrival at the project site, Jokowi took a close look at how two excavators were dredging all the sediment to deepen the river, while hundreds of local residents looked on.
The river is one of 12 in the city that are being dredged in anticipation of the rainy season, which is expected to reach its peak in December and January.
