Govt told to develop electric cars

T

he Muhammadiyah central executive board has called on the government to be serious in its pledge to produce electric cars because the products could benefit the state, the community and the environment.

The statement was made by Muhammadiyah deputy chairman Yunahar Ilyas on Tuesday at the organization'€™s headquarters in Yogyakarta after testing an electric bus produced by the Research and Technology Ministry.

'€œIndustries in Indonesia should support the program. Unfortunately, they seem to be reluctant to fund research on it,'€ Yunahar said.

The bus was in the city as part of the ministry'€™s familiarization program to improve people'€™s knowledge of electric vehicles.

The bus was also tried out at the Yogyakarta State University campus before being driven to neighboring Surakarta in Central Java.

Separately, lawyer Darlis Purba, who was in charge of the electric vehicle familiarization program, said using electric cars would help reduce the state'€™s financial burden caused by the fuel subsidy.
