Govt to build elevated railway

T

he central government and the city administration haveagreed to construct an elevated railway in order to minimize fatal accidents atrail crossings in the city.

Transportation Minister EE Mangindaan said in his office on Wednesday the agreement was made in a meeting with Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama. '€œI met with Ahok and we are of the same opinion that like it or not an elevated railway has to be constructed in Jakarta because of the heavy traffic flow on all roads,'€ he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Mangindaan said the project would be carried out in 2014 but the elevated sections would be constructed only over the most congested parts of the city similar to that between Kota station in West Jakarta and Manggarai station in South Jakarta,

'€œThe elevated railway will not need any underpass or overpass,'€ he added.

The city government had planned to build overpasses and underpasses at crossings following the fatal collision between a commuter train and a gasoline tanker in Pondok Betung, South Jakarta, on Monday which left at least seven dead and more than 90 others injured.
