onstitutional Court (MK) chief justice Hamdan Zoelva wasquestioned by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Thursday inconnection to a graft case involving his predecessor, Akil Mochtar.
Hamdan, who did not answer media questions following his questioning session at the KPK headquarters, held a press conference, together with six other justices, at his office.
'I just gave my statement as a witness, for suspects Akil, Susi and Wawan, before the investigators for over two hours,' he said. 'Mainly [the questions] were about the ruling-delivery mechanism, particularly in the Lebak election dispute case.'
'I need to explain that myself and other justices, including Maria [Farida] and Anwar [Usman], were willing to undergo questioning by the KPK as we are determined to [...] restore the court's dignity.'
Hamdan said that he would only be willing to undergo another questioning session if the antigraft body secured permission from the President, as stipulated in the Constitutional Court Law.
KPK spokesperson Johan Budi, however, said that the 2002 Corruption Law stipulated that the KPK had the authority to question anyone up to the Vice President without permission from the President, as it did when it questioned Vice President Boediono in November regarding the Bank Century bailout.
Hamdan was on the same panel as Akil before the new panel formation, which saw Akil paired with Maria and Anwar, for local election dispute cases.
Media reports said that Hamdan was on the same panel as Akil in 2010 when the latter was accused of accepting bribes in connection to the Simalungun election dispute. Akil was cleared of the allegation
