The Surakarta administration in Central Java has deployed two special buses to serve residents with special needs.
Before being commissioned, the buses, called Begawan Abiyasa, were used during the 2011 ASEAN Paragames, which were held in the city. The buses were donated by the Central Java provincial administration to the Surakarta administration.
'The buses should support the activities of the disabled people,' Surakarta Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency head Yosca Herman Soedradjad said.
At a glance, the buses, which are built with a low deck on 30 centimeters off the ground, are ideal for disabled passengers. The bus interior is also wider than that of ordinary buses. Each of the buses are equipped with 25 seats, 10 of which are located at the front and the rest in the back. The empty section in the middle is reserved for wheelchairs.
However, Surakarta chapter Disabled Children Development Foundation (YPAC) head Endang Murniati said the buses were still no ideal for wheelchair users because the ramp at the door of the buses didn't slope enough, so those who wished to use it still needed assistance.(dic)
