Two armed robbers hit a jewelry store in Dumai, Pekanbaru, and got away with half a kilogram of gold jewelry on Thursday.
Shopkeeper Uul Syafrianto said he was opening the store when two men got off a motorcycle and approached him with guns in their hands. They demanded Uul open a display case containing gold jewelry.
Uul escaped from the robbers and fled inside to protect his family on the second floor. While Uul was calling out for help, the robbers smashed the display case and grabbed as much gold jewelry as they could.
'They got away with gold jewelry, mostly necklaces, weighing around 500 grams and worth Rp 300 million,' Uul said on Thursday.
Dumai Police Crime Investigation Division head Adj. Comr. Wisnu Wibowo said a team of detectives was pursuing the perpetrators. Wisnu bemoaned the fact that the store had no CCTV, which would have helped the police identify the robbers.
Wisnu said the police had found strong indications that the armed robbers were locals.
The armed robbery was the second within a month in the port city. In December, two armed robbers stole Rp 230 million from a local merchant who had just emerged from a bank.
