Hundreds of unpaid Bus workers go on strike

bout 500 staff of city-owned Transmusi bus company inPalembang, South Sumatra, went on strike on Wednesday, protesting againstarrears in wages for the company'€™s crews.

One of the protesters, Herman said he and his colleagues had not yet received their wages for December. He also claimed they had been receiving their wages in installment since August last year.

'€œSometimes we receive 50 percent, 20 percent or even 15 percent of our pay. The remainder might be paid another day,'€ The 35-year-old said.

Herman said a bus driver received a monthly salary of Rp 2.6 million (US$216) while a conductor was paid Rp 2.1 million a month. '€œThere might be only a few hundred of us, but thousands of people depend on us,'€ he added.
