The Gorontalo Police have named six students as suspected members of a motorcycle theft syndicate.
The students come from several senior high schools in Gorontalo city, and are all 15 or 16 years old.
Gorontalo Police intelligence and crime division chief First Insp. Adhi Pradana said on Friday that police had seized five Yamaha Mio motorcycles that were believed to have been stolen by the gang of students.
'The students operated in Gorontalo city and Bone Bolango regency, by targeting parked motorcycles,' Adhi said.
According to him, the six students divided up their different tasks, which included monitoring locations, removing the motorcycles and hot-wiring them.
Adhi said the motorcycles were not sold by the teenagers, but modified and used for illegal racing. The suspects had also formed their own motorcycle gang, he added.
Adhi said they could be charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on theft, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
'However, as they are still underage, they will be accompanied by their parents during questioning,' he said.
Separately, Gorontalo Education Office head Ben Idrus acknowledged his office had yet to take action regarding the matter. 'The stiffest sanction we can impose is to put them in their parents' care and transfer them to other schools,' he said.
