Director of Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict Sidney Jones says de-radicalization efforts being conducted by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) lack focus and clear methodology and outputs
irector of Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict Sidney Jones says de-radicalization efforts being conducted by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) lack focus and clear methodology and outputs.
'Finding 25 extremist mosques here, for example, is easier than monitoring some 800,000 others [throughout the country],' she told a discussion held at The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
She said among those mosques espousing extreme teachings were ones in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta and Bekasi.
She added that the blueprint on de-radicalization was still a work in progress.
To date, more than 700 people have been arrested by the police on terrorism charges and many of them have already been released. According to BNPT, those who had already been released from prison were still under police monitoring.
Police de-radicalization attempts have been often criticized as failures since they have failed to curb terrorism and new terror groups have emerged since their launching.
The National Police has said it needed a new law that would allow it to act preemptively to prevent terrorism.
