overnor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has expressed his disappointment with the City Council, which he says has moved slowly in its deliberation of the draft budget.
He said many projects related to flood control in the city, including the dredging of rivers and reservoirs, had to be suspended because the draft budget had not been endorsed.
'All works have to be suspended. The projects will resume soon after the draft budget is endorsed this week,' tribunnews.com quoted him as saying on Wednesday.
The dredging of 13 rivers and dozens of reservoirs, including the Pluit and Ria-Rio reservoirs in North and East Jakarta, are paid for in the 2014 budget.
'I want all the dredging projects to be carried out rapidly because most residents do not care about bureaucratic problems in the administration and they will blame me over the flood issue,' he said.
Jokowi explained that the dredging projects would require two to three years because the city administration would not only dredge but also widen the rivers and relocate residents living on the rivers' embankments.
