Search continues for victims of landslide

T

he evacuation team on Friday continued to look for victims of Wednesday'€™s landslide that was triggered by major flooding in Tomohon, some 20 kilometers from Manado.

'€œWe believe there are at least 10 people still buried under the rubble in Tabulinas. We have already evacuated three people, including one that was still alive,'€ Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Tomohon head Robby Kalangi said on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Robby said that the evacuation team included representatives from the National Search and Rescue Agency, personnel from the local military and North Sulawesi Police, as well as local residents.

Evacuation efforts will be focused in two locations, namely Tambulinas and another site, where the body of Olwin Oroh, head of the Kakaskasen Clinic, was buried.

The four people killed in the landslide were identified as Ronny Moguni, Edo Hermawan, Vecky Karinda and her grandson Jeremi Pantow.

Recent flash floods and landslides in Manado and nearby areas have damaged houses, claiming at least 16 lives and displacing thousands of others.

Some communities and companies have distributed aid to help the affected residents. Airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I Manado, for instance, planned to donate used clothes collected from baggage left by airline passengers that had yet to be claimed by their owners after being kept in storage for over three months, tribunnews.com reported.

PT Angkasa Pura I Manado General Manager Maslin Panggabean said that the left belongings also included baby clothes, blankets and diapers.

In Gorontalo, dozens of students collected donations for the people affected by the flash floods and landslides in Manado.

The students collected funds in strategic areas, such as the Jl, Jendral Sudirman junction, the five junction area and the border between Gorontalo municipality and regency.

'€œAs residents of a neighboring province, we feel that it is necessary to help our brothers and sisters affected by the floods in Manado,'€ Nasir Polidu, of Gorontalo Muhammadiyah University'€™s School of Health Science, said while collecting money in the five junction area in downtown Gorontalo city.

A similar activity was carried out by dozens of students of state-run SMA 1 Telaga high school, Gorontalo regency, after school hours.

'€œWe will be collecting donations for the next few days. By doing so at least we can help reduce the burdens on our brothers and sisters in Manado,'€ Djoko Jauhari, one of the students, said.

Meanwhile, in Manado, flooding has started to recede and people have begun to resume their normal daily activities.

The city'€™s main street, along Jl. Boulevard, which had been deserted due to the floods, for example, started welcoming crowds again. People also began flocking to the Mega Mas shopping center area.

Vehicles were also seen along Jl. Martadinatha in Paal Dua. However, traffic did move slowly as motorists had to avoid passing through the remaining mud left by the flood.
