Eleven dead in Jakarta floods: BPBD

The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has reported that 11 people have died in the capital city as a result of flooding.

'€œAs of today, the number of flood deaths in Jakarta has reached 11 since the beginning of the flooding disaster earlier this month,'€ said the agency'€™s disaster control head Basuki Rakhmat at City Hall, Central Jakarta, on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Among the victims are H. Masri, 76, a resident of Bidara Cina sub-district, East Jakarta, and Hidayat, 35, a resident of Kampung Melayu sub-district, East Jakarta, who both died due to illness, according to data from BPBD Jakarta for the period of Jan.12 to Jan.20.

Meanwhile, Asep, 27, a resident of Bintaro sub-district, South Jakarta, and Fatimah, 5, from Duri Kosambi sub-district, West Jakarta, died after falling into flooded drains.

Zulfikar, 22, a resident of Cipinang Besar Utara, East Jakarta, died after being dragged into a swollen river while Supoyo, 44, a resident of Kebon Bawang sub-district, North Jakarta, was electrocuted at his home.

'€œA resident from Lubang Buaya is reported to be missing. The status of the victim who was swept into a river remains unknown. The Search and Rescue (SAR) team is still searching for the victim,'€ said Basuki.

He said the BPBD urged all Jakarta residents affected by the flooding to remain vigilant and to immediately take refuge in a safer location.

According to official data, 63,958 residents have taken refuge in temporary shelters in 293 evacuation locations. This year'€™s flooding has affected 97 sub-districts in Jakarta. (ebf)
